Tournament Report- 2009 WPBA San Diego Classic (April 1-5, 2009)

The San Diego Classic at the Viejas Casino in Alpine, California, was the first stop on the 2009 WPBA Tour. Gerda had an amazing tournament resulting in a third-place finish. After being knocked to the one-loss side of the tournament bracket, Gerda was facing imminent elimination while playing Allison Fisher. Fisher took a fast 6-2 lead over Gerda in their race to nine. After two more games the score was 7-3 in favor of Fisher. Gerda mounted a come-back and won five of the next six games resulting in a hill-hill match with Gerda breaking. Gerda had been struggling with the break shot all tournament and had failed to pocket a ball in any previous breaks in this match. This time she managed to sink a ball on the break and ran out the rack to take the match, knocking Allison Fisher out of the event in the 9th place spot. In her Round-of-Eightmatch, Gerda bested Xio Ting Pan 9-5 to make it to the televised Semi-Final match against Ga Young Kim. It was this match that ended Gerda's amazing run when Ga Young Kim beat her 7-5. A detailed recap of the match courtesy of the WPBA can be read here.
